Chapter 22

The first person we see when we walk down the path to Happy Ever After is Kevin, who appears to be pruning his roses. He looks up as we approach and smiles. “Just the person I was looking for.”

He stops what he’s doing and heads over and says quickly, “I’ve been doing a little digging into the ring and found something that may interest you.”

“Really, what is it?”

“I trawled through the local history and there was one article I found that may tell us who it belonged to, if you like I’ll tell you what I discovered.”

“Yes, please.” I make to follow him and Freddie says quickly, “I’m sorry, Susie, I must run because of the appointment. Did you still want to come with me?”

Now I’m torn because I really want to know what Kevin found, but I also want to go with Freddie. However, fate has another card up its sleeve and we look with surprise as a police car pulls up beside us and officer Murphy smiles as he winds the window down.

“Just the person I need to see.”

I don’t miss the twinkle in his eye and the slightly devilish smile he directs at me and I also don’t miss that Freddie is looking a little worried right now, so I turn to him and say quickly, “Listen, I’m sorry, you should go to your appointment. Maybe it’s best I stay here and sort out the ring, we’ll catch up later.”

He looks a little put out and smiles tightly, “Ok, no problem, until later then.”

“Yes, oh and Freddie…” he turns and I smile. “Thanks for coming with me, I’m glad you were there to witness that.”

“Yes, it was informative, as well as interesting, oh and exciting of course.” he grins as I roll my eyes. “I get the message. Now go, you don’t want to keep destiny waiting.”

He turns and heads towards his car and for a fleeting moment, I feel like running after him but then officer Murphy brings me back to the matter in hand and says pleasantly, “So, I have some news that may interest you.”

Kevin catches my eye and looks as interested as I am and the officer says quickly, “Maybe we should take a walk and I’ll fill you in.”

He stares at Kevin and says firmly, “If you don’t mind, I’d like to talk to Susie alone, she may not want anyone else hearing what I’m about to tell her.”

Kevin looks surprised, and now I’m intrigued. What has he found?
